About us

We thru-hiked the PCT in 2007 and received so much kindness and help along the way.  We’ve hosted hikers since 2006 – we enjoy helping you start your epic adventure. We hosted 17 in 2006 and 1300 (!) in 2019. Check out our 2007 trail journal.

Scout went on to hike the Continental Divide Trail in 2015 and the Appalachian Trail in 2017. He’s now a Triple Crowner.

Scout retired from practicing law a decade ago and is now a book author and freelance writer.  In spring 2017 he completed 9 years on the Board of the PCTA, 3 years as Board Chair.  He also served on the Board of the Continental Divide Trail Coalition and is currently on the board of the Partnership for the National Trails System and its past president.

Frodo is a Ph.D. molecular biologist who did research at UCSD for several years, then spent 16 years teaching high school biology before retiring 10 years ago.  She still enjoys hiking, but hiked the BEST trail – the PCT – for her one thru-hike.

Below is a photo of us on our honeymoon backpack in 1977:

We have three grown children who have somehow all managed to end up on the other side of the country, in Washington, D.C.  We have two young grandsons and an infant granddaughter, who we love being with.

Most established trail angels who provide a place for you to stay are dependent on donations to help cover costs.  We are the exception.  We are in the fortunate position of being able to host hikers without asking for donations, nor do we accept them.  We encourage you to join the PCTA if you’re not already a member.  And if you appreciate our help, you can purchase Scout’s book Journeys North. Here’s Scout’s author website.

and you can follow him on Instagram.
